About This Website
Trying to look casual on the summit of Tête Fourche in 2024.
I’m Jack Paton, thanks for visiting my website.
I’ve had this website in one guise or another since I was about nine years old. With some time on my hands after finishing university, I’ve redesigned the site with the following goals in mind.
1. A landing page for my academic work. My home page gives a timeline of my research experience, starting with my work at York in astrophysics and continuing through as I start to pursue working in oceanography research. I also post some pieces of work I’m proud of and updates from my career on the “Academic” section of my blog.
2. A blog for when I have something I think worth sharing. In an internet polluted with AI posts and saturated with banner ads, I’ve increasingly been turning to small, personal websites to find answers to find answers to niche questions.
As such, when I haven’t found a satisfactory write-up or answer to a question online already, I’ve written my own. These are on a wide variety of subjects, but generally describe my solution to problems I’ve faced in travelling and being in the outdoors.
Due to their nature these posts are sporadic at best. You can explore my blog posts here. I hope you may find something useful!
3. A place to display my photos and an exercise in web design. For a large portion of its history this website has functioned as a photography portfolio. I still enjoy using it as a platform for my photos, either within blog posts or in my gallery which I try to keep reasonably up to date.
I have built this website entirely by myself from scratch using WordPress with the Divi Theme. As such, there may be some issues or things that don’t quite work, but this keeps the site completely independent and personal. It also ensures you will never find any adverts, marketing or cookies on this site.
Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss anything on this website further.
