My Final Year Masters Project

by Jack Paton | Oct 21, 2025 | Academic | 0 comments

In 2025, I completed my four year Masters in Physics with Astrophysics at the University of York. This culminated in my final year project, where I worked on a new experimental electrothermal thruster for use in nanosatellites, known as Pocket Rocket, where gas is heated via an electrically controlled plasma. My project specifically looked at how changing the electric waveform applied to the gas to the form the plasma can be used to alter the heating properties and efficiency. It was a really interesting project where I really got to grips with simulation and modelling work in a way I hadn’t been exposed to before. I was very proud to achieve first-class for my dissertation on the project, which you can read below.
